Dweorghs

Below is a list of the main Dweorghs mentioned in the tales of old, it contains just the main Dweorgh characters and is by no means an extensive list, I would refer you to more learned sites mentioned on our Links page if you would like to learn more. Dweorghs, aka Dvergr (basically Dwarf), although allusion to dwarves are rare in Englisc, they are more frequently mentioned in other 'Germanic' sagas. They are the master smiths, living in mountains or rocks and are extremely covetous of their treasures. The Gods' greatest treasures (Woden's spear Gungnir, Þunor's hammer etc.) were all made by dweorghs. They are generally seen as untrustworthy and some can be dangerous to your health to say the least. Like Þyrs they turn to stone in day light, some of them may also, like Þyrs, of evolved into Trolls in some stories.

Alberich

aka Andvari

Dweorgh King of the Nibelung hoard, he guarded the Rhinegold treasure. He gave Sigmund the sword Balmung, Freo the necklace Brisingamen, Woden his ring & the magical sword Tyrfing, he loses his hoard of treasure to Loki and is overcome by Sigurd.

Alfrigg, Berling, Dvalin & Grer

The four dweorghs who created the necklace Brisingamen, which was acquired by Freo after she sleeps with them. Dvalin is also said to of been the one who introduced runes to the dweorghs.

Alvis

He created weapons for the Gods, he desired Þunor's daughter Þrud and was promised her by the Gods in return for his services. Þunor however devised a plan to prevent this marriage, he tells Alvis he has to prove his wisdom and makes the tests last until sunrise, when he turns to stone (not that wise then).

An & Anar

Characters mentioned in The Seeress's Prophecy.

Austri, Nordi, Sudri & Westri

aka East, North, South & West

The four Dweorghs who hold up Ymir's skull which forms the sky.

Bavor, Bivor, Bombur & Nori

Four dweorghs mentioned in the Seeress's Prophecy.

Brokk & Eiti

Brothers who created the hammer Mjollnir, the boar Gullinbursti and the ring Draupnir.

Dockalfar

aka Dark Dwarves

Formed from the maggots in the rotting flesh of Ymir, they are too ugly to be seen and so are condemned to a life undergound, turning to stone in sunlight.

Fjalar & Galar

Brothers who slay the wiseman Kvasir in order to gain his magic powers by tuning his blood into the mead of poetry. They then murder the Þyr Gilling & his wife, their son Suttung threatens to kill them in revenge and so they give him this magic mead, which is eventually drunk by Woden.

Ivaldi

Dweorgh whose sons spun hair of gold for Sif at Loki's request & made Woden's spear Gungnir, and Frea's ship Skidbladnir.

Litr

The unfortunate dwarf kicked into Bealdor's funeral pyre ship by Þunor.
