Below is a list of Þyrs from the sagas, these are mostly protagonists to the Gods. Another being called a Troll may well be familiar to you, these are probably creatures that began life as either rock Þyrs or Frost Þyrs, and evolved into the hideous Troll. They are all said to turn into stone when exposed to sunlight, indeed there are many places in the 'Germanic' world, particularly Scandinavia, that are said to be the very remains of these beings turned to stone. Þyrs, aka Eoten, Ettins, Þurs, Jotunn, or what we would call Giants, are said to appear in mists & fogs, the Anglo-Saxons may have looked upon the Þyr as a malevolent creature, intelligent enough to be compared to the Christian Satan. It should be pointed out however, that in some tales they are the complete opposite, indeed some are the parents of, or are themselves considered Gods. They all derive from Ymir (apart from Buri), the primeval Þyr who was created at the begining of time. Woden & his brothers Vili & Ve
eventually slay Ymir, to prevent the further creation of Frost Þyrs, from his remains the world is made. Two Þyrs survive this slaughter, Bergelmir & his wife to carry on their race.

A Þyress, mother of Gerda, mentioned in the Song of Hyndla.
Aurnir
A Mountain Þyr from The Song of Grotti.
Baugi
A farmer Þyr and brother of Suttung, his brother obtains the mead of poetry from the dweorghs Fjalar & Galar which he hides in a mountain, this is then guarded by Suttung's daughter Gunnlod. Woden decides to possess this mead and works for Baugi for a whole year in return for a sip of this mead. After a year Baugi drills into the mountain, upon which Woden changes into a snake and slithers in, when he reaches Gunnlod he pesuades her to allow him three sips, but he drinks it all, changes into an eagle and escapes.

Slain by Frea, who uses a deer's antler as he had given his sword to his servant Skirnir to woo Gerda, who may possibly be Beli's sister.
Bergelmir
Frost Þyr, son of Þrudgelmir, and progenator of the Frost Þyrs. He & his wife were the only Frost
Þyrs to survive after his grandfather Ymir was slain, they escaped in a hollowed out tree trunk, all the others drown
in Ymir's blood. Their offspring never lose their hatred of the Gods for this act and along with the inglorious dead of Hel's
domain, they are destined to settle the final account for Ymir's dismemberment at Ragnarok.

According to the Gróttasöngr these sisters are is said to be responsible for making sea water salty.

Brother of Þiazi.
Geirrod
Father of Gjalp & Greip, the enemy of Þunor. He captures Loki when the God is in the form of a hawk and makes him promise to bring Þunor to his hall without his magic belt & weapons. Unfortunately for him Þunor is warned by the Þyrd Grid who gives him a magic staff. With this is able to slay Geirrod, his daughters & his servants.
Gerda
Beautiful Þyr, daughter of Gymir and Aurboda, wife of Frea (reluctantly), the Aurora Borealis was believed to be her radiance.
Gilling
Foolish Þyr, father of Suttung and Baugi, he is killed by the Dweorghs Fjalar & Galar. They persaude him to row them out to the middle of a lake, they then capsize the boat, hanging onto the wreckage until they reach the shore. Gilling is too foolish to do this and drowns, they then climb onto the roof of his house, crying out that he has been killed. His wife runs out screaming in anguish and they drop a millstone upon her head killing her also.

Owner of the stallion Gullfaxi, he challenges Woden and Sleipnir to a race, he then challenges Þunor to a duel, who slays him (a piece of his weapon, a whetstone, lodges itself in Þunor's skull). When his heart is cut out it is found to be in the shape of a triangle.

He takes Þunor fishing (reluctantly) during which Þunor hooks Jormungard. Owner of a magic cauldron that the Gods wanted to brew mead in, he is slain by Þunor when he tries to retrieve it after Þunor has stolen it.

Son of Gilling whose death he avenges by tying the Dweorghs Fjalar & Galar to a rock that will be submerged by the tide. They begged Suttung to spare them, promising him the magical mead of poetry which he accepts. He hides this deep within a mountain, making his daughter Gunnlod guard it. It is eventually drunk by Woden who turns into an eagle to escape Suttung & Gunnlod.

Father of Skadi, he dwells in Þrymheim, disguised as an eagle he gourged himself on the ox cooked by Woden, Honir & Loki, and then kidnaps Idun, he is finally slain by the Æsir.

Frost Þyress who thwarts the Gods attempt to bring Bealdor back from the realm of the dead, she is possibly Loki in disguise.
Þrudgelmir

Son of Ymir, father of Bergelmir.
Þrym
Ruler of Jotunheim, he steals Þunor's hammer Mjollnir, making the Gods promise to give Freo as his wife in exchange. There is a great battle at the wedding reception in which he and his kin are all slain.

Þyr who is antagonistic to the Gods, ruler of the castle Utgarðir in Jotunheim, he sets Þunor tests, which of course are all rigged.
Vafðrudnir
Wise Frost Þyr who gains knowledge from the dead, he is defeated by Woden in a battle of wits.
Ymir
aka, Aurgelmir, Blain
The primordial Þyr, proginator of the Frost Þyrs. He was created from the melting ice of Niflheim & the hot air of Muspell, from his sleeping body the first Þyrs sprang, created by the sweat from his armpits. He was the personification of evil and so is slain by Woden & his brothers Ve & Vili to prevent the creation of more Þyrs, from his body they created the cosmos.
